Driving Instruction

Behind the wheel driving lessons in our late model, air conditioned, dual controlled cars. Our lessons are a full 1 hour lesson, not 45 minutes like some driving schools. We provide complete, private, one on one lessons, you will not be in the car with four other students.

We offer driving lessons in Dutchess County including Poughkeepsie, Hyde Park, Wappingers Falls, Millbrook, and Red Hook. Orange County including Newburgh. Rockland Counties including, New City, Clarkstown, Nanuet, Spring Valley, Monsey and Nyack.

We also offer classroom instruction for the New York 6 hour course at our Poughkeepsie location or we can come to you (for groups only). Call for schedule and group pricing.

The New York class is titled, “6-Hour Safe Driving Accident Prevention Program” (SDAPP).
PIRP (Point and Insurance Reduction Program), this course is provided both online or in our classroom. Completion of this course will entitle you to a 10% discount on your automobile insurance for three (3) years. The New Jersey class is titled, 6-Hour Defensive Driving Course (DDC).

Before a driver can schedule a road test, they must complete the 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course.

This course will help new drivers to learn basic rules of the road and teach them how to handle different driving situations. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Understand basic traffic rules and their reasons
• Know how to handle various situations on the road
• Understand how different factors affect their driving
• Understand the effects of alcohol and other drugs on driving ability

The cost for the 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course is $40.00

Parents! Before signing your teenager up for a Driver’s Ed class at a local high school or college consider this. Driver Ed class is usually 14 to 16 weeks long meeting twice a week, once for actual driving, the other for classroom training. So, your teenager gets 14 to 16 times out in the car with an instructor to meet the required 24 hours of in car training. What most parents don’t realize however is that there are 3 other students in the car with your teenager. Each driving session is 90 minutes long; this time is divided among the 4 students in the car meaning your son or daughter is getting approximately 22 minutes of driving time each session. The overall time for the entire course that your son or daughter will get is approximately 6 hours of actual driving time and 24 hours of classroom time. While classroom is valuable, the real learning comes by doing, by being behind the wheel. Many of our students have reporte that the person driving is often subjected to teasing from those in the back seat, making some students very uncomfortable. Additionally, you either have to drop your son/daughter off at school or pick them up after their lesson or both.

At SmartRider Driving School, your son or daughter will get one full hour of one on one driving lessons with just him/her and the instructor in the car. Our instructors are professional, experienced and patient, our cars are equipped with dual brakes, mirrors, and all other features required by DMV. In many cases we will pick you teenager up at home or at school and drop them off when lesson is complete (depending on location).
